Beginning Band Frequently Asked Questions
Q: My child does not know how to play an instrument. Can they still be in the band?
A: YES! Students are not expected to have any previous musical experience before entering band class. In Beginning Band, they will learn all of the basics and then begin instruction on the instrument they select.
Q: When does band meet?
A: Beginning band meets Friday mornings from 7:55-8:50 am. Students will also have a 30 minute group lesson with like instruments on Wednesday or Friday (depending on the instrument they select).
Q: Are there commitments outside of the school day?
A: Beginning band will perform in two concerts outside of the school day, one in December and one in May.
Q: How much does it cost to be in band?
A: Instrument rental will vary depending on the instrument and brand and whether it is new or used. We will have a representative from Kidder Music available at the Display/Sign Up Night so that you can ask questions and/or reserve an instrument for the upcoming school year.
Q: What other costs can we expect throughout the year?
A: Students will be required to purchase their band book (Tradition of Excellence) and proper accessories to maintain their instrument.
Q: I have an instrument at home. Can my child use that instrument?
A: Yes. If you have an instrument at home, your child can use that instrument, however, I would strongly recommend having it looked over to make sure everything is proper working condition. Learning an instrument is challenging enough without having to combat an uncooperative instrument. As long as the instrument is in good working order, there should be no problem with the student using it.
Q: Can I buy an instrument online?
A: When buying an instrument online, it is VERY important to know the brand and quality of the instrument. Some deals online can be great - some can be terrible. When looking for an instrument online, please consult with the director about the brand before purchasing. Although an off brand instrument can be a cheaper initial investment, many times those instruments do not have standard parts. If something breaks, many music stores cannot repair them. Stay away from “fun” colored instruments, as they often times do not have standard parts and repair shops won't work on them.
Q: Can my child change instruments in the middle of the year?
A: No. Changing instruments is not recommended. If a student is really having difficulty the director will address this situation with the family and help make a decision that is best for that child’s musical development.
